The Natural Resources, Environment, Livestock and Food Security Department will:-

  • Formulate and implement policies and strategies relating to the conservation and management of Natural Resources, Environment, Livestock Development, Drought Management and Food Security in Northern Kenya and Other Arid Lands.
  • Provide a platform for all actors, participating in the Natural Resource Conservation, Environmental Management, Livestock Development, Drought Management and Food Security initiatives in the region.
  • Establish and sustain good working relationships with relevant line Ministries/Departments and agencies.
  • Identify and provide innovative, workable and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing Conservation and Management of Natural Resources, Environment, Livestock Development, Drought Management and Food Security in the region.
  • Coordinate and harmonize related programmes and projects and;
  • Interpret policies and relevant statues in line with the Ministry's mandates, goals objectives.

Launch of UWEZO Kenya first literacy assessment

Mohamed Elmi, the Minister of State for Development of Northern Kenya and other Arid Lands, launched the first annual learning assessment by UWEZO Kenya on 22 April 2010. UWEZO is a new regional initiative in East Africa which seeks to assess and improve literacy and numeracy skills among children.
The report highlighted the particular educational challenges facing Kenya arid districts, and the depth of inequality between the north and the rest of Kenya.
